The Biology Department at Santa Clara University, a Jesuit, Catholic University, seeks applicants for an adjunct lecturer for Spring quarter 2018 to teach a lecture and lab course in “Biostatistics” for upper-division life science majors. This is a course in applied statistics for biologists and environmental scientists. Students gain training in experimental design, quantitative analysis, and hypothesis testing. Theory, concepts and methods are covered in lectures and readings. Laboratory sessions should provide practical experience in computing statistical procedures with statistical software. Examples used in lectures and lab assignments may be derived from medical research, public health, ecology, and/or environmental risk assessment. The quarter is 10 weeks long, with an 11th week for final examinations. The successful applicant will teach both the lecture and the lab parts of the course.
Salary: $14,520 for the lecture and two lab sections
PhD in Biology or a related discipline.
Some teaching experience.
Must be available to teach
MWF 9:15-10:20 AM
W 11:45 AM – 2:00 PM
W 2:15-5:00 PM
Prior independent teaching experience strongly prefered.
Postdoctoral experience welcome but not required.
Duties include but are not limited to:
A. Teaching an undergraduate course in applied statistics for life science majors. This course has a separate computer laboratory component.
B. Fulfilling all responsibilities associated with this course, including
a. Conducting all assigned class meetings.
b. Assigning and evaluating all written work, projects, and exams that align with course learning objectives.
c. Holding weekly office hours on campus.
d. Assigning and submitting student grades to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
e. Administering numerical and narrative course evaluations to students in all courses.
f. Fulfilling other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by the Chair of the Biology Department.
